Handwara: Two decades after Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, 43, a resident of Yahama, Mawar in Kupwara district, lost his legs and four fingers to army torture, he has also lost hopes in “humanity”. While Nazir hardly ever had any hopes of seeing his tormentors punished, he did, however, expect the government or society to help him with a job or financial assistance. Living in a small two room house along with his son, Nazir has preserved the copy of an FIR registered at the Sanzipora police station, Handwara, on 12 April 1995, against 14 Dogra regiment, along with other documents that substantiate the tales of his torture. Forces launch cordon-and-search operation in Handwara

Srinagar, Nov 25 : Government forces on Saturday evening cordoned off Kralgund area of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district and conducted searches as they suspected the presence of some militants. Official sources told news agency GNS that the contingents of army and Special Operation Group (SOG) cordoned off Hanjin hamlet which is close to the forests and started searches. A police official while confirming the cordon-and-search operation in the area told GNS that some suspected militants are believed to be hiding inside the area. “Some warning shots has been fired towards the suspected spot, however, there was no response from the other side”. Locals said that the forces have sealed all the entry and exit points. The area continues to be under forces’ siege and there was no exchange of gunfire when this report was being filed. Swine flu: Another H1N1 positive dies in SKIMS; toll 8

Srinagar: A swine flu victim who was admitted in Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura died on Saturday taking the death toll of confirmed H1N1 patients to 8, an official said this afternoon. “One female patient 72-years-old expired today as a case of Carcinoma Esophagus with Sepsis and tested positive for H1N1 also,” a spokesperson of the SKIMS said in a statement issued to GNS. The spokesperson, however, didn’t identify the victim. Apart from the death of another person, 14 more patients are admitted in SKIMS, the spokesperson said. Man killed in hit and run accident in Palhallan

Srinagar: A man was killed in a hit and run accident at Pallahan area of Pattan in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district late Friday evening. According to reports a speedy four wheeler vehicle hit a man and injured him critically at Pallahan last evening and fled from the spot, however the injured was rushed to Sub District Hospital Pattan where he succumbed to his injuries later reports added. Militants abduct, kill army man in South Kashmir

(GNS): A bullet- riddled body of an army soldier, was recovered in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Saturday morning. Official sources said that the body of the soldier, was found by the locals and accordingly informed the police. The police recovered the body soon after information that the army man was lying in pool of blood inside Wothmula Nad area of Keegam. SSP Shopian Ambarkar Shriram told news agency GNS while confirming the incident identified the deceased as Irfan Dar s/o Ghulam Mohd Dar r/o Sanzan village. “He was perhaps kidnapped by militants.
